Canavan Associates is an established firm of Chartered Town Planners, Registered Architects, Environmental Managers and Wind Energy Consultants providing specialist skills for wind energy developments as well as a range of services in town planning, architecture, environmental studies, economic and community development. We are based in the northwest and provide these services throughout the island of Ireland.
We have a successful track record for two decades preparing and managing
wind energy planning applications and complete EIAs in Ireland and Northern
Ireland. This has involved nearly 40 commercial wind farms with planning
permission gained for 11 commercial wind energy projects of a combined
138.5MW of wind energy in N. and S. Ireland since 2003 alone. We have
secured planning permission in N. Ireland for five commercial wind farms
in the past two years (Screggagh, Thornog, Gortfinbar, Seegronan, and
Pollnalaght) with other permissions for single turbines.
We are involved in numerous wind energy projects from inception to finish
and maintain active liaison with planning and regulatory agencies to achieve
project approval. Our expertise allows us to identify issues early on
and to successfully respond to and resolve these. We have immediate knowledge
of emerging policy and guidance for wind energy development in both jurisdictions.
For wind energy services we prepare in house: Environmental Statements, planning applications, wind development layouts design, landscape and visual impact assessments, shadow flicker assessment, power prediction, preliminary noise impact assessments and feasibility studies
We also actively manage and maintain a range of various specialist environmental sub-consultants (ecology, birds, bats, geotechnical, hydrology, peat, archaeology, fisheries, noise) for EIA work.
Our breadth of professional skills and expertise includes services for provision of Environmental Impact Assessments; Habitat Regulations Appropriate Assessments and Screening Reports, Planning Appeals to the Planning Appeals Commission and An Bord Pleanála (we have successfully won several wind energy appeals from both bodies), Feasibility Studies & Economic Appraisals, Development Plans; full architectural, services including Design, Energy Assessments, Site Investigation, Surveying, Mapping; Construction Management Plans, Construction and Fire permits.
Our team members have wide professional skills and experience, with qualifications
in town and environmental planning, energy, architecture, design, construction,
regeneration, community development. Staff have MSc and MA Masters Qualifications
in planning, renewable energy, and environmental management with memberships
of the:

- Irish Planning Institute (IPI)
- Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA)
- Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI)
- Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA)
The practice is an InvestNI Company. We are presently implementing an Integrated Quality Management scheme for systems accreditation in 2011 under:
